Okagbare wins 100 metres Commonwealth gold
Nigeria’s track queen, Blessing Okagbare, yesterday smashed the 12 year old Commonwealth games 100 metres record of 10.91 seconds after she ran a brilliant 10.85 seconds to win the gold medal of the event. Blessing outclassed a field of Jamaican athletes including Commonwealth veteran, Veronica Campbell-Brown to win the race. Nigeria’s Gloria Asunmu finished last in the race.
Nigeria’s Mark Jelks came fifth in the men’s 100 metres final after he had initially led the park for the first 70 metres.
The story was also not good for Nigeria’s female quarter milers as both Omolara Omotosho and Regina George failed to make it to the 400 metres finals. Folashade Abugan will be the only athlete representing Nigeria in the female 400 metres final race after she qualified as one of the top two fastest losers.
Okagbare will be competing in the 200 metres and the long jump events of the competition.
