The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a lifelong pension bill for former governors and deputy governors in Akwa-Ibom state has been passed. The bill named: former Governor and Deputy Governor’s Pension Bill 2014, allows ex-governors to be paid pension for life at a rate equivalent to the salary of an incumbent governor.

The executive bill, which had earlier passed the first and second reading, was presented for deliberations at committee of the whole at plenary.

A former governor will also be entitled to free medical services for himself or spouse at a rate of up to 100 million naira per annum, while an ex-deputy governor is entitled to 50 million naira per annum.

The law also provides for a former governor a sum not exceeding 5 million naira per month to employ domestic staff while the deputy gets 2.5 million naira for the same purpose.

All former governors will also be entitled to an accommodation of not less than 5-bedroom maisonette in either Abuja or Akwa Ibom; while a yearly accommodation allowance of 300 per cent of annual basic salary was approved for an ex-deputy governor.

A former governor will also receive a severance gratuity of 300 per cent of annual basic salary as at the time he leaves office.
