Fire at Exxon-Mobil Nigeria’s Qua-Iboe facility

There was a fire outbreak at the Exxon Mobil Corp. Qua Iboe terminal in Nigeria on Friday 27th June. This resulted in an oil spill at the facility located in Akwa Ibom state, Southern Nigeria. The Company said that the fire was ignited by lightening which ignited an oil tank.

The outbreak was however not enough to stop oil production as offshore production and loading of oil continued as scheduled. No fatalities or injuries were reported. However, emergency response systems have been activated to contain the spill and shoreline restoration has begun. The company has also informed the relevant authorities and community leaders of the incident.

According to the company, the amount of oil lost to the fire and spill has not been calculated.
